The role of a check-in agent varies depending on whether you are working at an airport or a ferry terminal.
Check-in Agent
Tasks may include:
• checking passengers onto flights and ferries
• checking-in and directing vehicles onto ferries
• checking passengers' passports and handing out customs documents
• checking international passengers have valid entry permits
• weighing baggage and collecting payment for overweight items
• organising for passengers' seats to be changed or for special meals to be provided
• looking after unaccompanied minors when their flight lands
• preparing flights for departure by liaising with flight attendants, caterers and cleaners
• tracing lost baggage.
Skills and knowledge
Check-in agents need to have:
• knowledge of security or dangerous goods procedures
• knowledge of different destinations
• knowledge of basic aircraft or ferry layout
• excellent customer service skills
• clear communication skills
• typing and computer skills
• decision making skills.
Personal qualities
To be a check-in agent you need to be:
• friendly, patient, discreet and diplomatic
• able to show empathy for nervous passengers
• calm and able to work well under pressure
• adaptable, quick thinking and efficient.
Career progression
Check-in agents who work at airports can progress into other positions within the airline industry, such as flight attendants. They may also move into a supervisory or duty manager position.
