Accounts Officer
Accounts officers arrange for an organisation’s bills to be paid.
Other tasks may include:
• handling general accounts queries
• checking and banking daily cash flow
• keeping records of financial transactions
• keeping customer account details up-to-date
• setting up new accounts
• checking credit ratings of new customers
• keeping records of costs such as labour and materials
• working out an organisation’s running costs.
Skills and knowledge
Accounts officers need to know about costing methods, basic accounting and how GST works. They need to have mathematical ability and good keyboard and computer skills. Record keeping, analytical and communication skills are also important.
Personal qualities
You need to be honest, accurate, organised and methodical, with an eye for detail. You also need to be able to take responsibility for your work and work well under pressure.
Career progression
Accounts officers can become accounting technicians by completing two years of professional experience and passing a professional competence exam set by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of NZ (ICANZ).
