Human Resources Manager

Human resources managers advise and support management on staff issues such as remuneration, staff development, strategy and training. They are also responsible for developing systems for staff recruitment, management, training and performance management.

Tasks may include:

• developing human resources plans
• advising management on staff and job matters
• designing policies and standards for staff issues
• writing job descriptions and interviewing job applicants
• analysing and advising on wage and salary plans
• consulting with management, staff and unions over pay and conditions
• managing the human resources team
• managing any equal employment opportunities plans or policies
• helping with the management of health and safety
• designing staff training courses
• managing the payroll.


Skills and knowledge

Human resources managers need to have:

• knowledge of their organisation and the staff roles within it
• an understanding of labour and tax laws
• knowledge of recruitment, including how to train and interview staff
• knowledge of rates of pay, and performance management systems
• an understanding of health and safety regulations and equal employment opportunities (EEO)
• excellent people and communication skills
• writing skills
• project management skills
• analytical skills.


 Personal qualities

To be a human resources manager you need to be understanding, patient and good at listening. You must be able to work well under pressure, make good judgments and keep information private. You must also have an awareness and understanding of a range of cultures.


Career progression

Human resources managers may be promoted to human resources director. Within multinational companies, there may be opportunities to work overseas for another office. They may also set up their own specialist consultancy company offering services such as recruitment, or move into other types of businesses.
