Preparing For a Job

When applying for jobs, you will need to have a well prepared CV. You should think of your CV (also known as a resume) as advertising material. Its aim is to sell your abilities to an employer and earn you a job interview.

Applying for a job

Preparing a top quality job application is an important first step in your career. The application process can help you think about the job you are after and the qualities you offer to potential employers.

Consider how your skills and experience match the needs of your potential employer. Do you have the knowledge, motivation, expertise and attitude to do well in this particular job?

Getting started

Ask for a copy of the job description and application form. These will describe the qualifications, experience and skills you need to be effective in the role.

In your application make sure you include examples of your background that show you have the ‘competence’ needed in the job. For example, if the competency is ‘customer focus’, explain why you are good at working with people by listing what you have done already - in a previous job, at school, or as part of a community project.

Preparing a CV

Include your curriculum vitae with your application and make sure it includes:

  1. Contact details
  • name
  • address
  • phone number(s)
  • email address

  • Start with your most recent employment
  • Include months and years you were in the job
  • State the name of the organisation and your job title
  • List your key responsibilities
  • Describe your key achievements. What difference did you make in that job?
  1. Education and qualifications. This section normally comes after work experience, but if you don’t have any work experience yet put this section first.
  2. Courses/papers
