Benefits of Industry Training

What industry training means and how it can help your performance and productivity

What is industry training?

Industry training, also referred to as workplace or ‘on the job’ training, is learning and skill development linked to the needs of workers, workplaces and industry. It means employees can develop skills and knowledge while they work; training towards valuable national qualifications on the job.*

Over 180,000 people take part in industry training every year, with 35,000 businesses and organisations of all sizes making the investment. Between 2001 and 2006, over 210,000 people successfully completed industry training programmes.

What are the benefits of industry training?

Industry training is an investment in the future of your business.

Training benefits all parties; providing professional development opportunities for employees means a more highly skilled, efficient and productive workforce for businesses.

By providing employees with an opportunity to ‘earn while they learn’, workplaces can:

  • meet their business objectives faster
  • increase morale and commitment
  • improve productivity and performance
  • improve quality and service levels
  • boost the reputation of their brand
  • reduce costs by decreasing wasted time and materials
  • increase retention rates

Productive staff are profitable staff

Industry training has a proven impact on productivity and profitability, with research confirming a measurable improvement to the bottom line of businesses. Research by the NZ Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) in 2004 identified that, based on econometric analysis, the recipients of industry training were likely to be between 5 and 20 percent more productive after industry training than before.

International research has identified that only 20% of the potential value of training is generally put to use, because most of the focus goes on the training event, and insufficient attention is played to preparation, motivation and follow-up. Further research (which included a number of NZ enterprises) has suggested that workplace learning linked to clear certification - i.e. industry training - is more likely to result in actual productivity gains.

Valuing your assets

In a tight labour market, up-skilling the internal workforce is a smart investment. In early 2007, 41 per cent of New Zealand businesses were experiencing difficulties in finding skilled staff. Employees who receive ongoing training are more likely to stay in their roles and keep their skills in the business, and they don’t need to leave the workplace to do it.

Learning while you work means employees don't have to borrow in order to study; they can continue to earn an income while they learn.

Staying ahead of the pack

Staying competitive is the key to business sustainability. Training can keep staff responsive to industry changes and up to date with market trends.  ATTTO has the pulse of industry in New Zealand; qualifications meet the real skill needs of tourism, travel, aviation and museums businesses. All qualifications are nationally recognised and have been developed in partnership with current industry professionals – developed with industry, for industry.

Investing in staff training is an investment in your business.
