Selecting Gateway Trainees

Find out how to add value to your business through a Gateway placement

Selecting students for Gateway placements

It is essential for the success of a placement that the workplace plays an active role with the school in the selection of the student and in the planning of a learning programme that is suited to the workplace.

Student eligibility

To be eligible for Gateway school students must:

  • be in years 11-13 (forms 5-7)
  • be New Zealand (or Australian) residents
  • be interested in a career in your industry and be work ready
  • fit criteria set by your company, for example, they must be able to work weekends
  • have a positive attitude to work and training.

Workplace requirements

Employers wanting to offer a Gateway work placement to a student must:

  • ensure the workplace environment is safe and appropriate for the age range
  • ensure the Gateway students will learn in the workplace with support from a workplace mentor
  • ensure the mentor and workplace is positive and supportive and keen to be part of the Gateway scheme
  • sign a written agreement and a learning plan agreed between the school, the employer, the accredited industry assessor and the student. The school is responsible for Gateway administration and ATTTO for the reporting of credit to NZQA
  • attest in writing that placed students have displayed workplace competencies
  • familiarise themselves with the Gateway information provided for schools and for students.

Employer health and safety responsibilities under Gateway

The workplace is not expected to provide safety clothing and equipment - this is the responsibility of the school. Workplaces are required to train students in basic health and safety in the workplace in the same way that they train their employees.

If a student is injured while in your workplace, ACC will cover their injury. It is important that the doctor is told that it is not a workplace accident as students are not paid and are therefore not classed as employees.
