Apprenticeships in museums

If you’re thinking about a career in museums, the Travel and Tourism Modern Apprenticeship is a great way to get a foot in the door.

The programme is usually completed over three years, although you can complete it sooner. 

 Qualifications and skills

You’ll get valuable work experience as you work towards the National Certificate in Tourism and Travel Core Skills (Level 3) and the National Certificate in Museum Practice (Level 4). 

The course develops skills in communication and customer service, and museum collection maintenance.

You will also learn about Maori in museums, the purposes and functions of museums, industry legislation, and tourism destinations in New Zealand.

 Career prospects

Travel and Tourism apprentices may be employed in a range of jobs:

• attraction guide 
• adventure guide 
• events organiser 
• museum host
• tourism retailer
• rental vehicle representative 
• visitor information consultant 
• cabin attendant for railways and ferries
• frontline customer service roles.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for a Travel and Tourism Modern Apprenticeship you need to be:

• aged 16 - 21
• supported in your apprenticeship by your employer.
