National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (Gas Turbine Overhaul) (Level 4)

The National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (Gas Turbine Overhaul) is designed for people working in the aeronautical engineering industry and recognises the skills required to carry out overhauls and repairs to aircraft and/or aero-derivative gas turbine engines along with associated systems and components.

Unlike the other aeronautical engineering national certificates listed below, candidates are not required to work on aircraft components or structures, due to the aero-derivative nature of some of the gas turbine engines.  Candidates for this qualification must still meet the requirements under Part 43 of the Civil Aviation Rules 1990.  The qualification is structured to ensure that holders over all aspects of the repair processes for gas turbine engines.

This qualification incorporates compulsory unit standards common to the National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (Specialist Support) with optional strands in Aeronautical Composites, Aeronautical Electroplating, Aeronautical Machining, Aeronautical Non Destructive Testing, Aircraft Furnishings and Equipment, Aircraft Mechanical, Aircraft Painting, Aircraft Powerplant, Aircraft Structures, Armament, Avionics, and Rotorcraft, the National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering with strands in Aeronautical Non Destructive Testing, Armament, Avionic Electrical Repair, Avionic Instrument Repair, Avionic Maintenance, Avionic Radio Repair, Aircraft Mechanical, Aircraft Powerplant, Rotorcraft, and Aircraft Structures, and the National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (Related Technology), which cover aeronautical engineering maintenance practices, tools and equipment, and publications and documentation.  This qualification also includes health and safety and first aid as this is a workplace requirement in the industry.  Additionally it incorporates the repair and overhaul processes for the three main components of a gas turbine engine, along with the disassembly and assembly requirements.

The elective section incorporates unit standards covering the ancillary equipment and components that form the overall make-up of gas turbine engines, along with specialist unit standards required for inspection and testing both during and upon completion of the overhaul process.

This qualification can be used to build on skills and knowledge from the National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (Related Technology).  Candidates may progress towards the National Diploma in Aeronautical Maintenance Certification with strands in Aeroplane, Rotorcraft, and Powerplant to gain the privileges of certifying the release to service of aircraft components following maintenance as required for the issue of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Licence (AMEL) (issued under Part 66 of the Civil Aviation Rules 1990).
