National Certificate in Museum Practice (Level 4)
Recognises the essential skills and knowledge required to work in all sectors within a museum.
It is intended for people training for a career, or currently employed or volunteering at an introductory to intermediate level, in a museum in New Zealand. The qualification comprises a compulsory and two elective sections. The standards in the Compulsory section along with one of the standards from Elective 1 are required to ensure candidates have essential knowledge of the four cornerstones of museum practice in New Zealand.
The standards cover: knowledge of museum collection maintenance; Maori in museums; the purposes, functions, and responsibilities of museums in Aotearoa New Zealand; the skills required to scope and propose a public museum programme; and museum customer service. In Elective 2 candidates may then either choose further museum-specific standards or other relevant standards in order to develop supplementary skills required for various roles within the museum sector. This qualification may build on skills attained through the National Certificate in Tourism and Travel (Core Skills) (Level 3).
