Tourism Gateway

Tourism Gateway

Tourism offers a wide variety of career choices, from dealing face-to-face with visitors, hosting tours and leading tourism activities, through to management and tourism strategy or marketing roles. It is an exciting and dynamic industry that makes an important contribution to New Zealand’s economy.

If your students are thinking about a career in tourism, Gateway is a great place to start. ATTTO offers three Gateway programme packages that will give students a taste of what it’s like to work in tourism, while gaining valuable work experience.

It is recommended that students secure work placements in tourism workplaces such as visitor information centres, tourist attractions, museums, adventure tourism or tour companies, conference/incentive venues or event management organisations.

ATTTO Tourism Gateway Camps

In 2011 ATTTO ran its first Tourism Gateway Camps, in conjunction with Te Hana Te Ao Marama Maori Cultural Village and other selected tourism-focussed marae in the north island. These week-long camps run during the school holidays and give students the opportunity to complete Tourism Gateway unit standards, while getting a taste of what it’s like to work in a Maori tourism business.

Students participate in the day-to-day running of the marae and cultural activities, while learning more about tourism in their regions, hearing from local tourism industry speakers and spending time in a classroom completing unit standards.

Career Pathways

Students that complete Tourism Gateway programmes may choose to move into a tourism training programme at a private training establishment, polytech, wananga or university.

If they choose to move directly into employment from school, they may have the option to train towards a Modern Apprenticeship in tourism or one of ATTTO’s tourism industry qualifications.
