Deck Hand (Ferry)
Deckhands help people getting on and off ferries, as well as loading and unloading their baggage.
Tasks may also include:
• helping with berthing, letting go and anchoring
• cleaning
• watching for possible hazards on the boat and at sea
• carrying out emergency procedures
• carrying out engine checks and taking readings
• refuelling the ferry
• giving passengers advice about their journey and destination
• preparing and serving food and drink.
Skills and knowledge
Deckhands need to have:
• rope handling, knots and lashings skills
• knowledge of safety and emergency procedures, including firefighting and navigation
• knowledge of the journey and destination
• good communication skills.
Personal qualities
To be a deckhand you need to be polite and friendly with passengers, and able to pay attention to detail. You should also be able to remain calm in an emergency.
Career progression
Most deckhands gain an inshore launchmaster certificate and progress to skipper. They can also use their maritime experience and contacts to work in other areas of the maritime industry.
