Retail Salesperson

Retail salespeople in the tourism sector usually sell goods to customers in a shop or visitor centre.

Tasks may include:

• helping customers choose products
• advising on the use and care of products
• packing or wrapping purchases
• keeping sales areas clean and tidy
• carrying out stock-takes
• ordering new stock
• arranging the delivery of purchases
• prepare invoices and sales dockets.


Skills and knowledge

Retail salespeople need to have:

• product knowledge
• knowledge of the Consumer Guarantees Act
• good communication and listening skills
• good customer service and sales skills
• basic maths skills
• organisation skills.


Personal qualities

You need to be friendly, helpful, polite and patient. You should also be self-motivated and honest, and enjoy dealing with the public. It also helps to be enthusiastic and interested in the products you are selling.


Career progression

Retail salespeople may progress into supervisory or management roles.
