Tour Coach Drivers

Tour coach drivers drive a long-distance bus and escort tourists and local people on sightseeing or educational tours. Some drivers may give a commentary en route.

Tour Coach Driver


Tasks may include:

• ensuring the coach is in good working order, fully fuelled and clean
• liaising with the tour company or tour guide about the party’s itinerary
• loading luggage into the bus
• safely driving the coach according to an itinerary or timetable
• delivering a commentary on points of interest along the way
• getting involved in tour activities
• helping passengers with further travel information
• maintaining a coach log book.


Skills and knowledge

Tour coach drivers need to have:

• excellent driving skills and knowledge of defensive driving techniques
• understanding of the Road Code and transport regulations
• a good understanding of their route and local attractions
• good communication and people skills
• organisational, planning and time management skills
• first aid skills (preferably).


Personal qualities

To be a tour coach driver you need to be:

• courteous, helpful and friendly
• honest and reliable
• able to relate well to people from different cultures and age groups
• able to deal with difficult passengers
• able to remain calm in emergencies, and to work well under pressure.
