Aviation Modern Apprenticeships

Find out if an Aviation Modern Apprenticeship is for you

What are they about?

Becoming a Modern Apprentice (MA) is a smart way to gain a nationally recognised qualification while gaining practical skills on the job. The skills MAs learn will provide a great foundation to get them started on their chosen career pathway, all they need to get started is a workplace that is willing to give it a go!

Enrolling in a Modern Apprenticeship means the both the learner and the workplace will get the ongoing support of an ATTTO Industry Training Advisor (ITA), who will help get the programme started and follow up with visits every quarter to ensure the learning stays on track. Alongside this is the additional support of the ATTTO Trainee/Modern Apprentice Mentor, who is available for any queries and support throughout the programme.

Who are they for?

Modern Apprenticeships are for people aged between 16 and 21 who are employed in the Aeronautical Engineering sector of the Aviation industry. A positive attitude and a willingness to learn new skills is also a must!

What is available?

There are four Modern Apprenticeships available in the Aviation industry, depending on the career pathway that learners are interested in. They include:

  • MA in Aviation >> Aeronautical Engineering Specialist Support
  • MA in Aviation >> Aeronautical Engineering
  • MA in Aviation >> Gas Turbine Overhaul
  • MA in Aircraft Manufacture

How do they work?

To become an Aviation Modern Apprentice, it is highly recommended that an Aviation Gateway placement and/or a pre-apprenticeship course is completed. This can be undertaken through training
providers such as the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) (www.nmit.ac.nz) or Air New Zealand Training School (www.plane-training.com). It is a good idea to contact these providers to discuss
the most suitable course.

Once employment has been gained in the aviation industry, a Modern Apprenticeship may then be started. This will involve signing into a programme with the support of the workplace, and then working through the relevant National Certificate. Supporting Resources

Aviation Maintenance Engineer >> Personal Training Record (PTR) $40

The PTR is the preferred means for learners to document evidence that demonstrates the training and experience requirements for the issue and subsequent amendment of Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance Engineers’ License (AMEL). Developed by ATTTO and the CAA, the PTR records an individual’s examination history, courses and qualifications, record of employer/company authorisations, assessment history and more, and may be used in support of the following:

  • Initial issue of an AMEL
  • Issue of additional category(s)
  • Issue of rating(s)
  • Issue of a Maintenance Approval.

Delivery, Timeframes and Assessment

Modern Apprenticeship programmes can take up to 3 years to complete, depending on the programme chosen. This can often be achieved faster if learners are motivated to get the work done and they have a supportive workplace. The learning takes place through self paced work, which involves the collection of evidence of the work you do on the job. During this time Modern Apprentices will need to complete on-the-job assessments, which can be assessed in the workplace by a Registered Workplace Assessor. Assessment resources are available on the ATTTO website.

What does a Modern Apprenticeship cost?

Modern Apprenticeships are subsidised by the Government, which keeps costs to a minimum. There are fees required for things like ATTTO registration and The Personal Training Record (PTR), as well as assessment fees for workplaces who require the services of a Roving or ATTTO Assessor.

The benefit of enrolling in a Modern Apprenticeship is that it is a commitment between the workplace and the Modern Apprentice. The employer signs off on the learning and is involved in working through the programme with the Modern Apprentice, alongside the support provided by ATTTO.

Career Pathway options

A Modern Apprenticeship provides a great foundation to get learners started on their chosen career pathway in Aviation. Depending on which area of the industry people are interested in, completing a Modern Apprenticeship gives them the basis for moving onto other areas of specialty within the Aviation sector.

Will I get a Certificate?

Modern Apprentices will receive an ATTTO Modern Apprenticeship Certificate and a National Certificate in their applicable field upon completion of each qualification and on completion of the total
credits required.
