Aviation Core Skills - March 2008

The Aviation Core Skills qualification is aimed at giving trainees the generic skills required for working within an aviation environment at an introductory level. The qualification will be aimed at Level 3 requirements, and will contain strands for some specific roles within aviation.

The qualification is currently in the draft stage, and as such is not available for use as yet. We are aiming to get the draft approved by industry by June 2008, and will keep any updates on the progress of the qualification posted here.

Tourism and Travel qualification reviews - March 2008

National Certificate in Tourism and Travel (Introductory Skills) (Level 2)

The 10 unit standards that were posted on the ATTTO website for the National Certificate in Tourism and Travel (Introductory Skills) (Level 2) were submitted to NZQA for approval in December 2007.  The unit standards were returned to ATTTO at the end of February and require a small amount of rework before they are re-submitted to NZQA for the next stage of the approval process.  It is envisaged this rework will be completed and the unit standards sent back to NZQA by the end of March 2008.  We will provide you with another update once we receive confirmation from NZQA.

As per the proposed new qualification structure which was sent out via email in mid December, you will be aware that there are two destination unit standards that form part of the elective section of the qualification.  These two unit standards (Destination Australia and Destination Pacific Islands) were submitted to NZQA in February, however due to current NZQA workloads they will take approximately five months to complete the first part of the quality assurance cycle.

The qualification cannot be submitted until all the unit standards that make up the proposed new National Certificate in Tourism and Travel (Introductory Skills) (Level 2) are registered and on the National Qualifications Framework. With NZQA’s current timeframes it is likely that the qualification will not be submitted until the end of 2008. Please continue with business as usual this year.

National Certificate in Tourism (Core Skills) (Level 3)

As you may be aware, the new unit standards for this qualification are now registered and on the National Qualifications Framework. Until the new qualification is submitted, approved and registered it is business as usual.

ATTTO will advise you when you can use the new unit standards and qualification, but it will most likely be early 2009 before it will appear on the National Qualifications Framework ready for use. This is because the qualification cannot be submitted until the three unit standards the National Qualification Services currently have in with NZQA are approved and on the National Qualifications Framework. These unit standards are due back in May 2008.  Therefore the qualification will not be submitted until at least June 2008 and then the likely timeframe for quality assurance at NZQA will take until November 2008.

In the meantime please continue to use the National Certificate in Tourism and Travel (Core Skills) (Level 3) [Ref: 0876] version 3 and the unit standards listed within it (please note for unit standard 18237 you should be using version 1).

If you go onto the NZQA website, you will find it says these unit standards have expired (the review process allows for a two year 'window' to continue use of the 'old' unit standards as they will not expire until December 2009). If you need a copy of a unit standard that has been replaced and no longer accessible on the NZQA website (including unit standard 18237 version 1), or have any queries regarding resources for 2008, please contact Cathryn Gillett either by fax 04 499 6577, email or phone 04 496 5090.
