Most people completing National Certificates in Tourism and/or Travel will desire to be international travellers, use the information in this manual to find out more about the places that you want to visit. Be it health and safety information or passport information, by the end of this unit you will be a more informed traveller.

This manual had been constructed to cover the following Unit Standard:

18282 – Advise customers of regulatory requirements for international air travel.

Providing advice to people going overseas is a very important part of a travel agent’s job. As a travel agent, customers see you as the expert and will expect you to provide information that will make a difference to their trip.

If you are knowledgeable and take care of their needs, they are likely to return and make future bookings with you. If you do not provide sufficient travel advice for their needs, they may book with a more knowledgeable travel agent in the future.

At the start of your career you may be selling domestic, then short-haul travel products. As you become more experienced you will sell long-haul or multi-destination products. This allows you to build up your knowledge base over time – nobody expects you to know everything when you first start.

By the end of the manual you will have covered the following topics:
• New Zealand passports
• Entry and re-entry visas
• How regulations and advice of the following organisations affect international travellers:
• New Zealand Customs Service
• Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF)
• Civil Aviation Authority
• World Health Organisation
• Vaccinations and medical requirements
• Checking travellers’ documentation prior to international travel
• Briefing international travellers before departure about their trip.

The topics in this manual are also valuable for students who are likely to pursue a career in other parts of travel and tourism (i.e. not as a travel agent).
